The First Assault

‘Velázquez, check the hydraulic system pressure,’ Pose ordered, his voice muffled by the padding of his leather flying headset.

‘Nominal pressure at eight hundred and fifty pounds, Lieutenant. The system is responding correctly,’ the non-commissioned officer replied, keeping his eyes fixed on the instruments of the central console.

‘Sir, we are ready to begin taxiing,’ Pose announced, turning his head to look back over his shoulder.

‘Proceed, Pose,’ Olezza replied, with a composure that contrasted sharply with the silent tension enveloping the cabin.

To grasp the true magnitude of the thunderous roar unleashed when that radial engine came to life upon the lower plateau of Seymour Island, one must return to the final stages of the winter of 1969.

In those days, the bureaucracy entrenched in Buenos Aires remained convinced that the Antarctic Sector should be governed through a form of seasonal sovereignty, limited to the icebreaker’s summer campaigns. At Larsen Nunatak, however, Vice-Commodore Mario Luis Olezza was silently and defiantly playing a game of chess that would shatter the inertia of an entire era.

His feverish gaze was not fixed upon the comfort of military quarters, but upon an ice-free topographical anomaly whose importance had already been recognised by the visionary Vice-Commodore Marambio.

Olezza’s original plan did not envisage the immediate use of conventional wheels upon the island’s rocky surface, for the aviation technology then available, combined with the complete absence of infrastructure, made such an audacious undertaking impracticable.

The technical and human assault formally began on 30 August 1969, a date that would become permanently inscribed in the annals of polar endeavour.

On that bitterly cold day, a single-engined de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver, bearing the registration P-03 on its tail, took off from Teniente Matienzo Base fitted with snow skis. At the controls of the rugged aircraft sat Lieutenant Oscar José Pose Ortiz de Rozas, a pilot of steely nerve and delicate sensitivity at the controls, assisted by the watchful Principal Non-Commissioned Officer Ramón Alberto Velázquez.

Lieutenant Mario Víctor Licciardello and the first non-commissioned officers of the Sovereignty Patrol were crammed into the limited space of the cargo cabin, wedged between hand tools and provisions essential to their survival.

During that first approach, Pose did not point the Beaver’s nose towards the upper permafrost of the island. Instead, he descended with precision towards the very surface of the Weddell Sea.

With a flawless manoeuvre that defied the treacherous air currents, he brought P-03 down in a perfect ski landing upon the frozen sea ice covering López Bertodano Bay. There, at the foot of cliffs plunging from a height of more than two hundred metres, Camp Alpha was formally established.

Operational command of this precarious outpost was entrusted to Lieutenant Francisco Florencio Mensi. His monumental responsibility would be to coordinate the reception of airborne supplies and ensure the group’s logistical withdrawal should adverse weather conditions make it necessary.

From that moment onwards, the epic undertaking abandoned the relative ease of mechanical traction and became an entirely human effort, driven by the strength of the pioneers’ arms and hearts.

Under Licciardello’s direct command, the patrolmen began climbing the slippery slopes of Seymour Island on foot. Every pickaxe, every shovel, every two-hundred-litre drum of kerosene and every crate of field rations was carried upwards on their backs, step by step, in defiance of the abyss and the fatigue that stiffened their muscles.

At the top, exposed to the full force of the wind, the twenty-one chosen men established Camp Beta. Their only fragile protection against the extreme cold, which fell beyond thirty degrees below zero, consisted of the canvas walls of Alberta-type field tents, precariously secured behind a dry-stone barrier constructed from the empty fuel drums that gradually accumulated around them.

For twenty-five endless, agonising days, the plateau of Seymour Island became a kind of prehistoric quarry where time appeared to have stopped. The island’s geological features, providentially free of snow, revealed a crust of fossilised mud, loose slabs of rock and frozen clay as hard as the purest granite.

Without modern bulldozers, tipper lorries or heavy-duty cranes, the only instruments of Argentine sovereignty at that latitude were pickaxes, shovels and the unbreakable physical endurance of men selected for their fortitude and their proven abilities in the hangars of the mainland.

Master Non-Commissioned Officer Mario Rogelio Ranieri was responsible for organising the exhausting work parties, which relieved one another continuously from sunrise to sunset. The physical effort demanded of them was destructive to the body. With the first sharp blow of a pickaxe against the permafrost, violent vibrations travelled through their arms, tearing at their tendons and cracking the wooden handles before they could dislodge even a miserable fragment of stone. Indeed, the tool handles broke faster than the ground itself; the extreme cold made the metal brittle and the wood prone to splintering.

Men such as Corporal First Class Juan Carlos Luján, Corporal First Class Ramón Alberto Velázquez and Corporal First Class José Luis Cortese worked continuous shifts that challenged the limits of human endurance. They stopped only when the barometers forecast windstorms so violent that remaining upright in the open became impossible.

The objective set by Olezza was modest in its dimensions but colossal in its execution: to clear and level a minimum strip three hundred metres long and twenty-five metres wide across the rocky plateau.

The most prominent slabs, which protruded like blades, had to be removed by hand. Hollows had to be filled with compacted clay, and every fragment of fossil rock capable of puncturing a tyre or destroying the delicate undercarriage of a conventional aeroplane had to be cleared away. Every metre wrested from the ground was silently celebrated as a victory against the isolation of their homeland.

The morning of 25 September 1969 finally brought a fragile but sufficient respite from the weather.

At Matienzo Base, after the synoptic charts and radio reports had been checked, final approval was granted. The thick oil inside the air-cooled, nine-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Junior radial engine, capable of producing four hundred and fifty horsepower, had been patiently preheated for hours with noisy kerosene-fired Primus heaters. This prevented the dense lubricant from obstructing the crankcase passages at the critical moment of ignition.

Lieutenant Pose settled into the left-hand seat of the cockpit, tightening the harness straps over his Antarctic-issue parka. To his right, Non-Commissioned Officer Velázquez reviewed the checklist, naturally assuming the dual role of flight mechanic and co-pilot on a mission that allowed no margin whatsoever for distraction or miscalculation.

Vice-Commodore Olezza positioned himself at the rear of the narrow fuselage, from which the seats had been removed to reduce weight. His presence aboard the flight was no mere ceremonial gesture. Olezza knew perfectly well that military doctrine and senior command regarded the idea of operating wheeled aircraft upon the plateau as sheer madness. Should the Beaver overturn or break its legs on Seymour Island, the military and professional ruin would fall entirely upon his own shoulders.

At 11.15 a.m., Beaver P-03 taxied along Matienzo’s runway on its skis, took off after a short run and climbed to gain altitude above the frozen strait off San Martín Land.

The north-easterly flight took place above a wilderness that creaked beneath the rigours of the late winter. As the aircraft approached the coordinates of Seymour Island, a dense front of leaden clouds began descending from the east, threatening to close the narrow window of visibility that meteorologist Amistadi had forecast from the ground.

When the elongated shape of Seymour Island finally came into view, Lieutenant Pose began his descent. The scene beyond the windscreen was intimidating. The lower plateau selected for the makeshift runway extended from south-west to north-east, parallel to the area’s prevailing winds. However, as the aircraft crossed directly above the southern cliff, violent air currents rose with extraordinary force, producing dangerous rotor turbulence that shook the Beaver’s structure and forced its left wing down alarmingly.

‘Watch that gust from port, Pose!’ Olezza warned from the rear, gripping the cabin structure for support. ‘It’s forcing our left wing down!’

‘I have it, sir. Applying trim and correcting with rudder,’ Pose replied with a surgeon’s calm, exerting firm pressure upon the pedals to keep the nose aligned with the imaginary centreline marked by the small red flags and aluminium sheets defining the beginning of the strip.

‘Velázquez, maximum revolutions, fine pitch on the propeller,’ the pilot instructed.

The engine’s characteristic hum became a deafening roar that echoed through the island’s ravines.

‘Fine pitch selected, mixture rich,’ Non-Commissioned Officer Velázquez confirmed, his left hand resting upon the throttle, ready to assist the pilot in the event of any interruption to the thrust.

At Camp Beta, the ground crew had completely abandoned their tools and gathered expectantly along both sides of the three-hundred-metre strip.

Lieutenant Licciardello kept his binoculars trained upon the Beaver’s undercarriage, holding his breath as he watched the two tyres protruding beneath the skis.

At that precise second, the entire fate of Operation Marambio depended upon the structural resistance of those tyres against the sharp slabs covering the Antarctic plateau.

The Beaver crossed the runway threshold at barely ten knots above its stalling speed, exploiting the aircraft’s capabilities to the fullest in order to shorten its stopping distance.

At exactly 11.45 a.m. on that historic 25 September 1969, the wheels finally made direct contact with the fossil ground of Seymour Island.

That first contact possessed none of the smoothness of a mainland aerodrome. It was a sharp, violent impact, a brutal blow that tested the elasticity of the shock absorbers and the load-bearing legs of the main undercarriage.

Immediately, a deafening hammering erupted against the aluminium belly of the fuselage as loose stones and hard fragments of frozen clay were violently thrown from beneath the tyres by the propeller’s airflow, striking the metal skin like shrapnel.

The Beaver bounced alarmingly twice over irregularities that the patrolmen’s pickaxes had been unable to level completely. Lieutenant Pose was forced to fight with all his strength, gripping the controls to prevent the aircraft from pitching forwards and overturning under the braking resistance exerted by the hardened mud.

‘Brakes, Pose! Gently but continuously — we’re running out of strip!’ Velázquez roared as the final red flag approached at an alarming speed through the side windows.

‘Braking!’ Pose replied, driving his heels into the pedals as the undercarriage shrieked and the tyres dragged across the stony ground.

The aeroplane decelerated brutally. Its tail swung violently to the right under an unexpected gust from the west, threatening to unleash a ground loop that would have destroyed the undercarriage. The pilot’s timely use of the rudder, however, corrected the drift in the final instant of the landing run.

With a sharp crack and a groan from the brake pads, the de Havilland came to a halt upon the stones of the plateau.

Looking through the windscreen, now covered by a thin layer of dust, Lieutenant Pose was able to appreciate the dramatic reality of the manoeuvre: the aircraft’s nose had stopped barely twenty-five metres from the end of the level ground, precisely where the steep downward slope began its descent towards the void of the sea cliff.

The pilot reduced the throttle to its minimum setting and the engine settled into an idle, producing a rhythmic purr that broke the ancient silence of the Seymour plateau.

For the first time in the annals of world aviation, an aircraft equipped with conventional wheeled undercarriage had successfully landed upon the permafrost of the Antarctic continent in the depths of the polar winter, vindicating Olezza’s audacious hypothesis at a single stroke.

Before the cloud of dust raised by the braking had settled, the Beaver’s doors opened. Vice-Commodore Olezza was the first to climb down from the cabin, planting the soles of his boots firmly upon Seymour Island’s frozen mud.

His weathered face, furrowed by the deep marks of tension accumulated over weeks of uncertainty, lit up with an open smile when he saw the men of the Sovereignty Patrol running towards the aeroplane, cheering with restrained enthusiasm.

Lieutenant Licciardello arrived at a trot, leading the group. His cold-weather clothing was completely soiled by the grey dust of the compacted rock. He came rigidly to attention before his superior in accordance with military regulations, although the emotion of the moment caused his voice to break as he delivered his report:

‘Sir! Camp Beta reports that the three-hundred-metre runway has been formally inaugurated, with no operational incidents affecting personnel or equipment,’ Licciardello exclaimed, his eyes visibly moist.

Olezza dismissed the formation, setting aside the rigidity of military protocol for a moment to embrace the young officer who had led the effort upon the plateau in a deep and brotherly hug. His voice hoarse but filled with profound conviction, the Vice-Commodore looked into the eyes of the men under his command.

‘What you have done here has no name in any military manual, lads. The bureaucracy decreed that deep-draught ships, months of logistical preparation and heavy bulldozers would be required to place a single wheel upon this island. Yet here is that wheel — and it was put here by twenty-one pairs of Argentine arms.’

Meanwhile, Pose and Velázquez had climbed down to conduct a visual inspection of the undercarriage. To their great relief and surprise, the tyres showed neither deep cuts nor deformation. This provided irrefutable proof that the monumental labour carried out by the ground crews had achieved an admirable standard of technical excellence.

‘They’re intact, Lieutenant,’ Velázquez announced, striking the tread of the left tyre firmly with the palm of his hand.

Olezza approached the airmen to congratulate them, gripping their gloved hands firmly.

‘Good work, Pose. That wind very nearly played us a nasty trick during the final seconds of the approach.’

With appropriate modesty, the pilot looked back at the narrow and rudimentary strip of cleared ground stretching behind him. He adjusted his balaclava before replying:

‘The Beaver performed magnificently, sir. But three hundred metres is scarcely a breath if the objective is to bring the heavy Douglas C-47 over from the hangars at Matienzo.’

Vice-Commodore Olezza nodded, fully acknowledging the pilot’s point, and turned towards the other patrol non-commissioned officers, who had gathered around the fuselage of P-03 with faces cracked by the cold. His voice regained the firmness of an irrevocable order.

‘Listen carefully, lads. Today we have finally shattered the myth of Antarctic winter isolation, but geopolitics does not wait for pioneers to finish celebrating. By the end of the week, I require four hundred metres of clear runway, and by October its total length must reach twelve hundred metres without fail. Douglas TA-05 is waiting at Matienzo and requires that distance to stop before the violent spring storms begin. Sharpen your pickaxes — the real work begins tomorrow!’

The roar of the Pratt & Whitney engine as the aircraft took off for its return flight to Matienzo barely an hour later marked the formal beginning of the second and most demanding phase of Operation Marambio.

The men of the Sovereignty Patrol walked silently back towards the canvas of their tents, their worn pickaxes resting upon their hardened shoulders. They knew perfectly well that their isolation remained absolute at the furthest reaches of the Weddell Sea, and that the implacable Antarctic winter had not yet fully withdrawn its icy claws.

Yet they also marched with the intimate and unshakeable certainty that the history of Argentine Antarctica had been set upon a new course for ever, beneath the indelible mark of those first wheels, branded as though by fire into the hard stone of the plateau.

Argentine Naval Aviation: A Pioneer in Antarctica

1942 – 7 February – 1952

The first flight over Antarctica and the first Argentine postal flight to the continent.

The Boeing Stearman 76D-1 flown by Lieutenant Eduardo Lanusse, accompanied by Chief Aviation Corporal Erik Bolmquist.

On 7 February 1942, Lieutenant Eduardo Lanusse piloted a Boeing Stearman 76D-1, a fragile biplane whose wheels had been replaced with floats. The aircraft was lowered into the sea from the Argentine Navy transport ship 1º de Mayo. After taking off, Lanusse flew over Deception Island in the Argentine Antarctic Sector. It was the first flight by an Argentine aircraft over the White Continent.

Chief Aviation Corporal Erik Bolmquist served as the aircraft’s mechanic and accompanied Lieutenant Lanusse on this historic flight.

During the same period, air transport routes to Patagonia were also opened. Regular logistical support services reached the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego using Curtiss Condor aircraft.

This marked the beginning of the effective presence of Argentine naval aviation in Patagonia and Antarctica.




The PBY-5A Catalina amphibious naval aircraft, serial numbers 3-P-5 and 2-P-3, carried out the first airmail flight between the American continent and Antarctica.

On another 7 February, this time in 1952, the first Argentine—and reportedly the first worldwide—flight linking the American continent with Antarctica took place. Two PBY-5A Catalina amphibious naval aircraft, serial numbers 3-P-5 and 2-P-3, departed from Río Grande Naval Air Base in Tierra del Fuego.

The formation was commanded by Commander Pedro Iraolagoitía, while the aircraft were piloted by Lieutenant Commander Edgardo Andrew and Lieutenant Guillermo Campbell. After crossing the Drake Passage, they alighted on the waters off Deception Island. The aircraft were carrying mail, thereby establishing the first airmail service between continental Argentina and Antarctica.

These milestones were followed by successive Antarctic campaigns, which conducted the surveys required for the subsequent establishment of Argentine bases.

After 105 years of continuous Argentine presence in Antarctica, the country operated six permanent bases and seven seasonal bases. At the time of writing, 45 countries maintained a presence and conducted scientific research on the frozen continent. Argentina was its undisputed pioneer.

Also on 7 February, in 1964, Naval Air Squadron No. 4 was established. It initially comprised the Search and Rescue Naval Air Squadron, the Second General-Purpose Naval Air Squadron and the Naval Helicopter Squadron.

The Harvesters — Part 1





In 1969, Argentina’s Antarctic policy hovered between routine administration and logistical neglect. To the General Staff in Buenos Aires, the Argentine Antarctic Sector was little more than an abstraction, attended to solely during the Summer Campaign.

Each December, the icebreaker General San Martín sailed south to relieve the crews, deliver provisions and fuel, and return before the ice closed the Weddell Sea once again in April.

For the remaining eight months, the White Continent was left in absolute isolation. If a scientist suffered appendicitis in July, or a base caught fire in August, the official response was simple: endure or die. Winter permitted no rescues.

Foreign powers operated according to a different philosophy.

Since the end of the Second World War, the United States, the Soviet Union and Britain had understood that sovereignty in Antarctica was no longer defended by planting flags in the ice, but by maintaining the ability to project air power throughout the year.

The construction of permanent runways had become the new geopolitical frontier. Whoever succeeded in breaking the winter isolation and landing an aircraft on conventional wheels would control strategic access to the continent.

Against this backdrop of institutional paralysis, Olezza began to make the bureaucrats behind their desks in the capital increasingly uncomfortable.

In the middle of that year, twenty-one members of the Argentine Air Force assembled at Teniente Matienzo Base, located on Larsen Nunatak.

There, winter greeted them with a storm that buried the installations and forced the men to remain confined indoors.


The Corrugated-Iron Bunker

Winter offered no respite on the nunatak. Outside the base, a white-out gale blew at ninety knots, scouring the corrugated-iron walls with a constant metallic shriek.

Inside, the main block lay in semi-darkness, broken only by the glow of a field stove that coughed out thick, oily smoke whenever the gusts outside blocked the chimney.

Olezza stood with the sleeves of his heavy shirt rolled up and his eyes reddened by confinement, his fists planted firmly upon a nautical chart of the Weddell Sea.

Opposite him, Lieutenant Oscar José Pose Ortiz de Rozas, commander of the base — a seasoned officer, sparing with words and possessed of natural authority — smoked in silence. His gaze rested upon the exact point where his superior’s finger repeatedly struck the chart: a small, elongated shape called Seymour Island.

‘Look at this, Pose,’ Olezza said, breaking the silence. ‘The bureaucracy in Buenos Aires suffers from winter blindness. To them, maintaining bases down here means leaving a group of men locked away, counting the days until they can return home. But look at this position.’

Vice-Commodore Mario Luis Olezza was a pilot of uncompromising character who combined the audacity of a military aviator with a long-term geopolitical vision. He refused to accept the doctrine of static sovereignty.

He spent hours examining the Air Force’s historical archives, searching for reports that administrative neglect had buried inside grey metal filing cabinets.

Pose adjusted the cuffs of his woollen jumper and leaned over the map.

‘I know the report Vice-Commodore Marambio left on record, sir. He was perfectly clear: the Seymour plateau lies in the direction of the prevailing winds. The same storms that bury us here sweep Seymour clean. The wind does the work of a broom. Snow does not accumulate; the crust of mud remains exposed. But seeing it from an Avro Lincoln is one thing. Standing on it is quite another.’

Olezza produced a worn folder bound with frayed cord and bearing the signature of Vice-Commodore Gustavo Argentino Marambio.

It contained the notes from Operation Enlace of 1952 and the subsequent technical reports. Before his tragic death, Marambio had left behind a remarkably prescient aviation testament after obsessively studying the island.

Olezza exhaled cigarette smoke towards the beams of the ceiling.

‘In Buenos Aires, they buried these papers because they consider the idea of operating wheeled aircraft on permafrost to be the fantasy of obsessive pilots.’

‘The engineers argue that constructing a runway there would require a fleet of deep-draught ships to transport heavy machinery, as well as cranes capable of lifting the equipment up the island’s steep cliffs, which plunge two hundred metres towards the frozen sea. Since the Air Force possesses neither those resources nor the budget to hire them, their verdict is final: Marambio’s dream is impracticable.’

‘And how do you expect us to move thousands of tonnes of stone to level nine hundred metres of runway without a single bulldozer, sir?’ Pose asked, folding his arms.

‘On our backs, Pose. With nothing but our backs and our arms,’ Olezza replied, fixing him with a steady gaze.

‘That is why we formed this group: so that it would not depend upon technology we do not possess. Twenty-one men, each one selected personally. If we wait for the official paperwork, the British or the Chileans will put a wheel on that plateau before we do. Geopolitics does not wait. Whoever controls Seymour will hold the key to permanent, year-round access to Antarctica.’

Olezza had submitted the project to his superiors under the title Operation Marambio.

The initial response had been systematic rejection on the grounds of ‘insufficient technical and financial feasibility’.

But Olezza was not a man who accepted no for an answer.

He decided to bypass the usual channels and pursue a strategy of accomplished fact. If there was no machinery, the runway would be built with the one resource the Air Force possessed in abundance: hardened men imbued with the spirit of the pioneers.

He secured the minimum political approval necessary to conduct an exploratory mission and began assembling, in the strictest operational secrecy, the contingent that would enter history as the Sovereignty Patrol.

Recruitment was not conducted through official bulletins or open calls for volunteers. Olezza travelled personally to different units throughout the country, searching for specific types of men in workshops and hangars.

He was not looking for parade-ground heroes, but for non-commissioned mechanics, radio telegraphists and tradesmen who understood how metal behaved under extreme cold and possessed the psychological resilience to withstand complete isolation.

They were men accustomed to solving problems with wire, improvisation and ingenuity whenever official spare parts failed to arrive.

Responsibility for organising the ground party fell to Lieutenant Pose Ortiz de Rozas himself and Lieutenant Mario Víctor Licciardello, who would assume direct operational command in the field.

Among the non-commissioned officers, the technical heart of the patrol was Master Non-Commissioned Officer Mario Rogelio Ranieri, a veteran of previous campaigns who understood the secrets of radial engines better than anyone.

The list of twenty-one men was completed by sixteen non-commissioned officers and one civilian whose role would prove crucial: meteorologist Alberto Omar Amistadi, who could interpret the subtle fluctuations of mercury barometers and anticipate the brief windows of clear weather before the storm closed its trap.

The door of the block flew open, admitting a blast of freezing air and Non-Commissioned Officer Ranieri, whose hands bore the scars of old frostbite burns suffered while tightening bolts in the open.

The meteorologist followed behind him, rubbing his arms to restore some warmth.

‘The barometer is rising, sir,’ Amistadi announced, brushing the snow from his parka. ‘If the pressure holds, we will have a visibility window over the strait tomorrow. Brief, but clear.’

Olezza nodded and looked at Pose.

‘There is your opportunity. Licciardello, Luján and Velázquez already have the sledges prepared. Ranieri, what is the condition of the engines?’

‘The fuel for the Primus heaters is being rationed down to the last gram, sir,’ Ranieri replied with the gravity of a veteran. ‘And the tools have already been packed. Pointed pickaxes, broad shovels and soft-iron crowbars. If the permafrost is as hard as granite, we shall wear out more wooden handles than sticks of dynamite, but the lads will not buckle.’

Pose looked at his men.

They were rugged tradesmen who would not break when the canvas of an Alberta tent was the only thing separating them from a storm at thirty degrees below zero.

Once deposited on the summit of Seymour Island, they would be entirely alone. If magnetic fading silenced the high-frequency radio, nobody on the mainland would know whether they were still alive.

The only way off the island would be to finish the runway with their own hands.


For two months, Pose subjected the group to a brutal programme of endurance training.

They practised erecting Alberta-type field tents in hurricane-force winds, rationed fuel and learnt to transport heavy loads across powder snow using improvised sledges.

Argentine Navy: Polar Support Vessel Project

Polar Support Vessel Project





Argentina seeks to recover a capability lost since 1989: a new Argentine polar logistics vessel.
The Tandanor project, designed in conjunction with the Finnish company Aker Arctic, aims to be the ideal partner for the icebreaker ARA Irízar, strengthening our presence in Antarctica.




The project is based on the Aker ARC 133 design but adapted to Antarctic conditions. With a length of 131.5m and a deadweight of 5,000 tons, diesel-electric propulsion, and three generators, it will be able to operate in first-year ice (PC4/PC5 class).





The hull is designed according to the international Polar Classification 4 (PC4) standard. This allows it to operate year-round in thick, old-year ice and to move continuously at 2 knots over ice up to 1 meter thick.


Its unique geometry, unlike that of conventional cargo ships, features a specific curvature in the bow and sides designed to break through ice by weight and displace the ice blocks to the sides, preventing damage to the propellers.

The original plan at Tandanor involved manufacturing the hull using pre-assembled blocks at the Almirante Storni Shipyard, which would then be assembled and welded on the slipway.

The construction of the new vessel requires the use of special naval steels that possess not only high mechanical strength but also exceptional toughness at extremely low temperatures.


The standard for vessels operating in polar waters, due to their ability to resist brittleness in extreme cold, is EH36/EH40. These are the most likely grades for the ice belt.




The technical development involves a key technology transfer. The goal is to decentralize the workload of the ARA Almirante Irízar, allowing it to focus on its role as a heavy icebreaker and scientific laboratory.

This unit seeks to recover the capabilities lost after the sinking of the ARA Bahía Paraíso in 1989. That vessel, built at the Príncipe, Menghi, and Penco shipyards (Buenos Aires), was a landmark of the national naval industry, measuring 132 meters in length and possessing a significant helicopter landing capability.





Today, the project faces budgetary challenges (estimated at over USD 195 million), but its completion is vital for the logistics of Petrel Base and the Antarctic bridge. Recovering a vessel of this class will restore the Argentine Navy's polar transport autonomy.

This presence matters under international law, as it strengthens sovereignty claims. Permanent facilities that support both scientific research and naval operations could bolster Argentina’s claim that it has an enduring and effective presence in its claimed sector of Antarctica.

  2. Scientific Leadership: Argentina has already invested in Antarctic research, and the Ushuaia base provides expanded logistical support to its Antarctic research stations. This enables Argentina to increase its contributions to scientific discovery, which is a core pillar of the Antarctic Treaty. By leading in scientific research, Argentina can argue for a greater say in future treaty negotiations.

  3. Maritime and Security Control: The Ushuaia base provides Argentina with the capacity to oversee maritime activities around Antarctica, especially in fishing, resource exploration, and illegal incursions. Argentine Air Force: Operation TRANSANTAR

FIRST TRICONTINENTAL TRANSANTARCTIC FLIGHT


Operation TRANSANTAR


Carried out between December 4 and 10, 1973 with a Hercules C-130 aircraft, registration TC-66.



It was carried out on an experimental basis, since it was about connecting Buenos Aires with Australia and New Zealand passing through the South Pole, with a stopover at the Marambio Base.



Facing a very near future, which we are already experiencing, the first tricontinental transantarctic flight carried out with a Hercules C-130 aircraft, opened up a new possibility for the country, that the Argentine Republic, now a terminal for so many airlines, abandons its marginal situation. to become an important air communications center.



Our airfields became transit airfields, instead of terminal airfields, meaning that the world now "does not end down there"; Australia, New Zealand and Oceania are our neighbors via Antarctica.


PREPARATIONS AND DEPARTURE

The flight over the South Pole was achieved after careful planning in which all the
experience that the Air Force has on operations in Antarctica.
Long years of flights carried out by navy and aviation planes provided the necessary data so that nothing was left to chance, that terrible factor that the Antarctic eliminates from all its projects.

“Chance is the door through which so many tragedies entered Antarctica,” the brigadier Fautario was able to recall, while commenting on the completion of the transpolar flight.

As soon as the assault on the Pole had been decided, with extreme urgency the solution to three problems was proposed: that of the necessary autonomy to cover the projected route, strictly determining the possible weights with which the plane could operate and the feasibility of touching the different airfields available for the trip.



Initially, the need to increase the autonomy of the Hercules to twenty hours was recognized, which has the capacity to fly thirteen hours without the need to refuel.

The technical group of the I Air Brigade assumed the task of modifying the fuel systems of the device and equipping it with two extra fuel tanks, which was achieved in an extremely short period of time and at such a low cost that it justified the interruption of a initial contact with the aircraft construction company.

This firm considered that the modifications would require 45 days of work and, in addition, they spent a very high budget to carry it out.



The flight tests of the new equipment - including changes to the aircraft's electronic installations - confirmed the capacity and ingenuity of the civil and military personnel of the I Air Brigade.
Precisely, in the course of one of the verification flights - having already verified the goodness of the fuel and navigation systems - a radial link was established with the Marambio base, during which the personnel stationed on this small Antarctic island reported that the The condition of the track was excellent and the temperature in the area was -2ºC, that is, a “spring” mark for that base.

The prevailing weather at our main air station in Antarctica introduced a variant in the flight calculations since it had been estimated that takeoff from Marambio would take place at about five degrees below zero. With low temperatures, the takeoff operation of a turboprop airplane is simplified. The air is denser and ensures that the engines reach their maximum power in a few seconds, shortening the necessary distance for the plane to achieve the lift necessary to take off.

Given the 1,200 m runway at the Marambio base, a relatively low temperature was required for a plane to achieve lift of 75 tons.

For this reason, it was agreed to use auxiliary rockets, called “JATOS”, which in number of eight represent an additional power equivalent to two more engines for a few seconds.

In any case, that radio conversation with Marambio expedited the events and then the time of departure was set for the night of Tuesday, December 4, 1973.

AT THE MARAMBIO BASE

On a flight without special alternatives, the Hercules arrived in Marambio at 02:51 on December 5.
Another Hercules was waiting on the runway, configured as a tanker plane that provided 17,000 liters of fuel in a minimum of time.

At that time, there was a total absence of wind on the island and the temperature reached 6ºC, unfavorable circumstances that made it necessary to use rockets to take off.

At 06:50 we were ready to head to the South Pole and face the most critical stage of the operation:
travel 1,200 m of the runway with the engines at maximum power and the rockets on to begin the great jump over the frozen continent. And the takeoff was done; Fourteen people aboard the Hercules breathed a sigh of relief when the plane jumped into the clouds to soar to 8,000 m, the optimal level for flight.

ON THE POLAR PLATEAU

The flight between Marambio and Canberra lasted 17:54 hours. A dense layer of clouds hid the Antarctic ice cap from the eyes of sailors. In the immensity of space, surrounded by the impressive silent calm of the heights, the plane maintained radial contact with Argentine territory. From El Palomar or Río Gallegos came voices from a familiar world; Behind each technical communication or meteorological report was hidden the word of encouragement from those who, although on the ground, made this 12,300 km flight that stretched between Australia and Argentina their own.

With favorable winds and an extreme temperature of -50ºC, the Hercules reached 80º South latitude, where the dense layer of clouds opened to offer the aeronauts the grandiose vision of the polar plateau extending its dazzling whiteness across the entire horizon. .

Near the South Pole, when the radar received the echo of the constructions of the Amundsen-Scott base, everyone on board felt like they were protagonists of a special moment: they were truly launched towards distant Australia; They participated in the opening of a new path whose political and economic perspectives are still unpredictable.

UNFAVORABLE WINDS

Shortly after flying over the South Pole, the intensity of the wind began to grow and already near McMurdo, the US base on the Ross Sea, gusts reached 155 km/h.

From that moment on, the wind began to be an obstacle to the plane's movement. Due to this, the Hercules made landfall in the capital of Australia almost two hours late, which involved dangerous fuel consumption.

For this last part of the trip, meteorological information was available from the World Meteorological Center in Melbourne, but it was not accurate enough. The actual high winds far exceeded the calculated winds.

After the passage of Hercules over Antarctica, we can affirm that in the future meteorological data will be of fundamental value to prevent commercial flights from suffering dangerous delays due to bow winds over the Drake Passage or over the Pacific.

On the circumpolar weather charts prepared daily by the National Meteorological Service, pilots must look for a “gap” between the cyclone trains that circumvent the Antarctic continent to have the help of tailwinds and reach their destination with an acceptable margin of security.

Furthermore, the insufficiency of weather data available in the Pacific Ocean west of Argentina, or in the Indian Ocean west of Australia, recommends the use of automatic buoys to close the meteorological network around the Sixth Continent.

THE RETURN

The Hercules took off on Saturday, December 8, from Canberra airport heading to Christchurch, in New Zealand, to depart from there on the 9th at 11:54 p.m. back to Argentina.

Flying in a straight line, the Hercules headed towards Marambio, leaving aside the route to the South Pole. Given the unfavorable weather conditions in the Marambio base area, the device continued its direct flight to Río Gallegos, where it made landfall that same day at 11:43 p.m., apparently eleven minutes before leaving New Zealand.

Paradoxical deception of astronomy and time zones... When the Hercules descended in Buenos Aires, nothing in its structure indicated that it had put an end to a daring voyage that united three continents through a dangerous route like few others: South America, Antarctica and
Australia.

The magnitude of the flight organized by the Air Force appears hidden by the normality that surrounded the operation; but currently flights through Antarctica have become part of everyday life, the regular news of this century in which men lost their capacity for wonder.

Although the world of Antarctic ice is still full of dangers, although the cold and wind create almost insurmountable walls to human activity, the Hercules C-130 opened a new stage in a world where the geography is increasingly smaller.

Argentine Antarctica: The 1972 Tragedy

Tragedy in Antarctica: fall into a crevasse, a man waiting to be rescued and a missing body

In February 1972, a somber incident unfolded on the Antarctic continent as a Snocat transporting a patrol to the Sobral Base plunged into a deep crevice. The unfortunate event resulted in the loss of one occupant's life, while the other, teetering on the brink of freezing, placed their trust in Providence but was ultimately rescued. This narrative encapsulates the valor and commitment exhibited by those who dared to endure a year in the challenging conditions of the white continent.

Inside the crevice, about sixty meters of icy depth, assistant mechanic sergeant Bladimiro Lezchik was conscious. He had an open fracture in his left shoulder and was bleeding from a deep wound in his scalp.

The vehicle he was driving, a Snocat, had fallen into a treacherous opening of ice that was hidden by the snow. His partner, Assistant Sergeant Oscar Kurzmann, 35, lay outside the destroyed vehicle. He was dead.

He remained for several hours in total darkness. While he asked for help, he thought about his family, his children. In a moment he resigned himself and entrusted himself to God.

When one of his companions came down with ropes to rescue him, he was freezing, he was at the limit of his strength and he was dominated by that dream from which it is impossible to wake up.

It was his first mission in Antarctica, where he had always dreamed of going, where he learned to know it through the stories of General Jorge Leal and when he set foot there he would be hooked forever. He said that it was like a magnet, a love, to which you always want to return.

Bladimiro (yes, with a long b, that's how they wrote it down) was a man from Formosa born in Colonia El Zapallito and he lived his childhood in El Colorado, a city in the southeast of the province, on the banks of the Bermejo River. His father had settled there, a Ukrainian who made his living as a tailor in his country, who traveled in carts making clothes and who in the harsh winter months when he couldn't go out, did theater.

With a group of friends he came to Argentina and when he wanted to return, a civil war had broken out between Russia and Poland. He knew that if he returned he would be drafted and he stayed. The original family surname is an endless string of consonants, and the civil registry employee wrote it the way he heard it and that's how it stayed.

In Formosa there is an important colony of Ukrainians. The Lezchiks dedicated themselves to the countryside and Bladimiro, until he entered primary school, only spoke his native language. Upon completion, since there was no secondary school in the area, they sent him to train at the Sergeant Cabral Non-Commissioned Officers School.

In 1961 he married Lidia Martyniuk, also of Ukrainian parents. He introduced them to a cousin at the end of 1957 when they returned to El Colorado on those endless train trips to Chaco and then by bus to the town of those who studied in Buenos Aires during the year.

When in 1970 they bought land and built a house in Rosario, they did so with a loan. Paying the fees was increasingly difficult, and the solution that Bladimiro saw was to offer to participate in a mission in Antarctica, for the significant extra that was charged.

Lezchik's dream was to go to the white continent, but he had not been lucky enough to be called up, despite the number of times he had signed up. Until he was selected.

They were first sent south to acclimatize to the cold and snow. His wife Lidia, who had worked until she got married, was left alone with two children, Elbio, 9, and Noemí, 5, in a neighborhood where there was only one house on her block and the rest were vacant. Before Lezchik left, who had a knack for fixing anything, he added extra latches to the doors and windows.

On January 18, 1972, the 34 men, including military and civilians, arrived in Antarctica. For some it was their first trip and others already had experience.

The first task was titanic. Transfer the cargo brought by the San Martín Icebreaker about five kilometers uphill to the Belgrano Base.

On February 8, after lunch, he left on his first mission. He was part of a patrol of ten men, commanded by Carlos Fontana, a first lieutenant who had fallen in love with Antarctica after reading Cuatro Años en las Orcas del Sur, by José Manuel Moneta. He turned 30 years old on the white continent.

The patrol left the General Belgrano Base towards Alférez Sobral, an inactive scientific base, located 410 kilometers to the south. They had to update the route and supply it with food and fuel, because the future plan was to reactivate it. Deactivated in October 1968, the Sobral is currently buried in ice.

The trip had to be made as soon as possible, because the polar night was approaching. Fontana considered the order meaningless, because the snow and ice were soft and the dangers increased.

They were in four Snocats, the “Córdoba”, “Chaco”, “Venado Tuerto” and “Santiago del Estero”. Each of them dragged three sleds. Lezchik drove the “Chaco” and was accompanied by Assistant Sergeant Oscar Kurzmann, who had already joined the Esperanza Base crew in 1964.

On the maps that the group carried, the areas of cracks were marked, gathered in a stretch of about 60 kilometers. They were driving in second gear and probing the terrain to locate possible openings.

At 11:40 p.m., at kilometer 72, the “Santiago del Estero” sounded the alarm: the “Chaco” had disappeared into a crevasse.

Only a dark hole was visible, from which what Fontana describes as “sea smoke” emanated, with a strong acrid smell. When faced with shouting calls, only Lezchik responded. He asked to be taken out. Immediately, the rescue operation was prepared.

Lezchik, who had managed to get out of the Snocat, saw that his companion was on a balcony in the crevice, dead. He felt the blood running down his face and how his body grew cold. As time passed, he knew the inexorable fate.

On the surface, his companions had organized themselves against the clock. Sergeant Domínguez offered to go down, because he was the one who weighed the least. They crossed boards over the immense gap, tied him to several nylon ropes and lowered him, but when the rope reached its limit, they heard his screams that he could not reach the place. They had to add two more sections.

The Snocat was destroyed, about sixty meters deep. Domínguez confirmed that Kurzmann had died. Then he took care of Lezchik.

He tied up this burly man of 1.92, who put his good arm around his neck. Laboriously, they climbed them.

Once on the surface, morphine was applied, his shoulder was immobilized and he received thirty stitches, without anesthesia, on his scalp. He was hypothermic and maneuvers were performed to stabilize him. They had to take him to the base because his life was in danger and they were running out of morphine.

While he was being assisted, Lieutenant Juan Carlos Videla and Leonardo Guzmán (with 14 winters in Antarctica under their belt) went down to rescue the body of their dead companion. They saw that his head was crushed. They covered her with the hood of their jacket.

When they were hoisting the body, the rope was cut and the body fell into the void. With a temperature of 20 degrees below zero, the men exhausted and one seriously injured, the chief, although at one point he thought about dividing the patrol, ordered to return to the base.

A wooden cross was improvised, milestones were placed to mark the place, and nine grieving men set out. They returned to the site on February 25, when weather permitted. They went in three Snocats and in one they carried a wooden coffin built by Assistant Sergeant Aragón and Sergeant Domínguez. To do so, they took the height of the head of the base as a measurement.

When they arrived at the place, they saw that the wooden cross was standing but that the crack had closed. They opened other holes and lowered a lantern that, due to the difference in temperature, exploded. They knew there was nothing they could do and they returned.

In November 1972, a fuel drum filled with ice with a metal cross, secured with steel cables, served as a monolith in tribute to the dead comrade.

For the patrol, it was a premonitory event. Days ago Kurzmann had confessed to Fontana that the day he died, he wanted to rest in Antarctica. He had already been at the Esperanza and Matienzo bases in other seasons and his vocation for being there was evident.

Lidia Lezchik found out about the accident because the police came to her house with a message from the Antarctic Directorate. Her challenge was then to talk to her husband on the phone.

Before leaving, Lezchik had asked, unsuccessfully, for a telephone line in a neighborhood that was conspicuous by its absence.

His son Elbio remembers that there were two ways to talk to his father. One was to go to the command in Rosario, where a link was made with the Belgrano Base and the other was a phone call. Since the family did not have a telephone, they went to a neighbor's house, a few blocks away, or used the phone booth at the bus terminal. The procedure was always the same: there were pre-established days and times to do it, the call was requested and you had to wait. Sometimes an eternity.

As a result of solidarity, the members of the base had the services of the LU2AO radio amateur, who gave up an hour every Sunday so they could communicate with their families.

Only a week after the accident was the woman able to speak with her husband. They were not clean transmissions, there was a lot of noise that caused the voices to be distorted. “It's like when you try to talk underwater,” she explained. Additionally, they had to close a question or phrase with a “change.”

Doubts immediately arose in the woman. What if it wasn't her husband who was talking to her? If it was a colleague who pretended to be him because she was more serious than what they had told him? I always asked these questions on the way back home after each communication. It was winter and the wife and her two children slept together in the double bed to feel less alone.

In those talks, the same thing always happened: as soon as Elbio heard his father's voice, the emotion overcame him, he couldn't speak and he crossed to the opposite square to calm down.

Lezchik had to remain in Antarctica because the ice closed and the sea route was cut off. Operated by Dr. Bianco, he cured his shoulder there after four months of convalescence. His colleagues said that he was a strong and tough “Pole”. They also nicknamed him “Russian” and “German.”

The return was a rough sailing on the icebreaker to Ushuaia, where they boarded a Hercules. The whole family went to wait for him at El Palomar. His wife's mystery was which person he would meet. That night the expectation was eternal because he was the last to get off the machine. “Didn't you see Lezchik?” he asked each of those who got off. “Yes, yes…” was the answer. But nothing else.

It broke Lidia's heart to see María Teresa, Oscar Kurzmann's wife, alone, waiting for the bag with her unfortunate husband's belongings, including books by Arthur Schopenhauer written in German.

He was the last to appear. The family, relieved to see that she could move on her own, ran down the track to the foot of the stairs towards this big man who was unrecognizable because he had grown a beard. There were no words, but kisses and hugs. She was surprised to see her children taller than her.

Endless hours of talks followed, where he recounted his experiences. They took a month's vacation and when they returned it was their turn to do their studies. He had a small bone in his shoulder raised a little higher.

He suffered from intense headaches and had to undergo psychological treatment for his recurring nightmares in which he dreamed that he fell into the crack.

He began to perform passive tasks in the Rosario military factory and in 1974 he was retired due to disability. They recommended that he dedicate himself to something that had nothing to do with his profession. That's how he became a taxi driver in Rosario. Vanesa's arrival had made him a father for the third time.

As his son remembers him, he was a silent, somewhat withdrawn person, with a very strong inner life.

He was also an evangelical pastor and with his wife they became the leaders of the “Sanctuary of Faith” temple, in Provincias Unidas in 2000, near the Rosario exit towards Funes, where nearly five thousand faithful attend. They had both been raised in that religion.

He was very detailed in everything he undertook and he himself fixed the car when it broke down. He liked to cook and had inherited organizational skills from the army. That habit made him a reference in the great campaigns of evangelism.

On Saturday, April 30, 2005, he was heading in his Peugeot 405 with other pastors to a meeting in the city of Buenos Aires. At kilometer 268 of the Rosario-Buenos Aires highway, near Arroyo Seco, there was a lot of fog and smoke, and they had to stop at the end of a long line led by a car that braked because it did not want to continue in those conditions. They were left behind a truck and another, loaded with soybeans, did not stop in time. Lezchik, at the wheel, died instantly along with another. A third, Norberto Carlini, saved his life.

He was 58 years old.

Carlos Fontana remained silent and after fifty years decided to tell what had happened that February 1972. On September 21 of last year, an event was organized, in which Kurzmann's nephews were given his file.

Noemí Lezchik
told Infobae that her father's eyes clouded with grief when he remembered his dead colleague, and it was a memory that accompanied him throughout his life. She says that he had two deaths, one when he had the accident, in which he was reborn when he was rescued and then on the highway where, far from the Antarctic ice that he was so passionate about, that son of Ukrainians who had learned Spanish at school and that everything he undertook in life he did with the same passion with which he lived.
